The Symptoms
A pregnant woman in her late 30s called for a phone visit. She had come down with the flu four days earlier. She still felt terrible.
The worst symptom was an awful headache. It felt like a vice grip on her temples with intense sinus congestion underneath. The sinus congestion was also causing gnawing, aching pain in her face and teeth. She was exhausted. She couldn’t get out of bed or even sit up.
She had had a low fever the night before with lots of sweating. Her temperature was back down to 99.1°F currently.
What She Had Tried
The patient had been managing symptoms at home with rest and hydration. After four days of illness, she was not improving.
The Solution
I asked her some questions to better understand the pattern of her symptoms.
A cold pack applied to her forehead helped a little with the headache. Biting down on her teeth gave a little pain relief from the facial and teeth pain. She was quite thirsty and preferred cold drinks.
She had terrible, aching bone pain over the past few days. The pain was mainly in her spine. She described feeling like she “got hit by a truck.”
I prescribed the homeopathic remedy Eupatorium 30c. She would take it twice a day for the next three days. This remedy fits the pattern of severe vice-like headache and deep aching bone pain. Since these were the most severe and remarkable symptoms in this case, this remedy was the best fit.
I also recommended general immune support:
1000mg of vitamin C three times per day
30mg of zinc daily
1 tsp of elderberry syrup three times per day
Continuing to get plenty of rest and stay hydrated
She was able to begin taking the homeopathic remedy that afternoon.
The Results
I checked in with the patient the next day. The headache had receded to a manageable level. She wasn’t fully recovered but was well on her way. By the following morning she felt well enough to go back to work.
Why It Works
Homeopathy is effective for treating the flu. It addresses the unique pattern of symptoms that each person experiences.
The flu or influenza is a virus. It typically makes one feel terrible for up to two weeks. Symptoms include fever, fatigue, body aches, headache, and runny nose. Sometimes people also experience cough and sore throat.
Some people develop moderate complications like sinus or ear infections. Others develop severe complications like pneumonia or inflammation of the heart, brain or muscles.
People at higher risk of developing complications include:
Elders (age 65 and older)
Young children
Pregnant women
Those with cancer, HIV/AIDS or diabetes
People with underlying respiratory illness like asthma
Those with underlying heart disease
Children with neurologic conditions
Homeopathy works by matching a remedy to the specific symptom pattern presented. Eupatorium was selected here because it fits the patient’s vice-like headache and deep bone pain. The remedy supports the body’s natural healing response.
Key Takeaways
Pattern matching is key: Homeopathy finds the right remedy for each person’s symptom pattern.
Safe for pregnancy: Homeopathic remedies are safe during pregnancy when prescribed correctly.
Quick relief possible: Many patients feel symptom relief within 24 to 48 hours.
Combine with immune support: Homeopathy works well with immune boosters like vitamin C, zinc, and elderberry.
Accessible care: You can reach your naturopathic doctor by phone or video chat. They are skilled in classical homeopathy and offer personalized flu recovery care.
